The National Squash Championships are back in Cape
Town for a second year in a row with the V&A Waterfront once again playing
host to the tournament. The championships are brought to you by Squash South
Africa in partnership with the City of Cape Town and Growthpoint Properties
A temporary glass court is the latest addition to the V&A Waterfront where 16 of the country's top squash players will duke it out for championship honours in the men's and women's categories.
The Squash South Africa sanctioned tournament is the pinnacle event in the sport's calendar with competitors having qualified from highly contested regional events.
The senior's competition kicked off this morning with the first round of matches for both women and men.
'The City of Cape Town is thrilled to be partnering with Squash SA for the Growthpoint SA Nationals once again. Following a successful event in 2021 under strict Covid-19 regulations, for us it was a no brainer that we would be involved in a fully-fledged event that will showcase not only the national squash competition but Cape Town as a premier destination for events and tourism. I would like to encourage Capetonians to head to the V&A Waterfront to support these talented squash players,' said the City Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith.
This week, the national U15, U17 and U19 champions were crowned in a junior tournament which is a curtain raiser for the senior's competition.
As part of its commitment to development and elevating the status of the sport, Squash South Africa will also host a development clinic for 30 youngsters affiliated to Ekapa Squash – a grassroots squash programme working with children from Langa – and Fish Hoek Development which works with learners from Masiphumelele and Ocean View.
They will also get the opportunity to play games with some of the professionals.
The National Squash Championships are taking place until Sunday, 11 September 2022. Entry is free however seating is limited.
Games take place daily between 11:00 and 16:30.
